April 27, 2016 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Stéphane Dion, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of International Development and La Francophonie, today announced that the Government of Canada will provide an additional $900,000 in funding to help the communities most affected by the recent earthquake in Ecuador. This brings Canada’s total humanitarian contribution to $2 million.

Immediately after the earthquake, Canada worked closely with the Government of Ecuador, the United Nations and a number of international organizations to provide humanitarian assistance to affected people and delivered critical consular support to Canadians citizens in the area. The Government of Canada also contributed to sending a Canadian Red Cross field hospital to help those injured in the earthquake.

The government’s Canadian Disaster Assessment Team evaluated the situation in Ecuador: the Government of Canada decided that the most effective means to deliver Canadian assistance was through international and Canadian organizations and chose not to deploy the Canadian Armed Forces’ Disaster Assistance Response Team.
